The hoof is elongated-- almost oblong-- and is wider at the heels than at any other point of the hoof. It almost looks like it could be a hind foot (which tends to be more spade-like, with a pointed toe). This horse had extremely high heels, which, I am sure, contributed to this hoof form. It is difficult to tell from this photo, but he also had a high ridge of sole at the toe. I suspect that this was helping to support the front of the foot because of the extra pressure on the frontal wall and toe because of the high heels.

Rounder Front Hoof -- November 2010

This photo was taken in November 2010. The hoof is now rounder, more like a front hoof should be. It is also now wider at the point where the bars meet the frog, as is physiologically proper. The frog is not as elongated and is a bit thicker. Also, the white line and wall separation have now grown out. While this hoof is still transforming, it is much better than it was a year ago.
